Impact on the audience
Hypodermic syringe theory is about the media giving the audience negative ideas and then going on to believing anything that is said as the audience is passive.
An active audience is a selection of people who see media as a source of entertainment and they are not influenced by any of it.
A passive audience is a group of people who interact with media and then go on to believe anything that was said even if it was not truthful.
While Chuck is stuck on the island he makes a few survival items, fire and weapons, if a younger audience was to watch the film, they may think what he is making is ok to make, while if they went out in public and made a fire and if they were to create a spear out of wood they would get into trouble.
The main male character Chuck is seen to be a hero and its portrayed as a strong determined man which could be a role model for other males watching the film, as they would like to be as passionate and determined to do things in their lives as Chuck did in his.
Representation
Stuart Hall in 1980 said that "All representations are meditated". In my film the main character being represented is Tom Hanks playing the role of Chuck. The film is based off a true story.
In 1979 Tessa Perkins gave a theory on stereotypes, within the film Chuck is made out to be a stereotypical male, who is strong and independent, he manages to work his way home, this shows he is determined and he is powerful, he wont let anything get in the way so he can get home to his wife.
The stereotype of the male character being strong is a good influence for the male and female audiences as they will see it as a ideal self and the females would see it as an ideal partner.
Within the film there are no characters challenging the stereotypical views. The female character is at home, re-married as she thinks that Chuck is dead, while Chuck the male is battling for survival and getting home to his wife / Ex-Wife. This follows the stereotypes portrayed to everyone.
Legal and ethical
Copyright infringement is when someone uses content that you do not have the right to use or you have no permission to use the content. If you go on to use the content without permission you may be sued a sum of money by the owner or you can be legally prosecuted by the owner.
Ethical issues such as offensive material, this can include; racism, sexual content, strong language, violence and drugs. Things like these can be sensationalised in films to make them look good and better than what they actually are. In the film they would need to get permission to use copyrighted content such as the songs and the main company 'Fed-Ex', although this may have been product placement and Fed-Ex may have paid
20th Century Fox would have had to gain permission for a number of things they used in the film 'Cast Away'. Within the trailer they used a composition made by someone called Alan Silvestri, They would have had to contact him and gain permission to use the music over the top of the trailer. If they hadn't contacted him, he could have sued them and he would have been granted a large sum of money. Also 20th Century Fox would have to gain permission to base their film around the company Fed-Ex, and using their logos and packaging throughout the film.
Within the film there is nothing that is overly offensive, but there is a few inappropriate words used
but according to the BBFC you are allowed to use a few swear words within the film in a PG, the film is rated 12. BBFC declare that the film is rated a 12 because it 'Contains some frightening scenes and mild language'.
BBFC
The BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) is the company which declares the certification for the films based on the clarifications of normal parents after watching the trailer. The film was aimed at 12+ ages as younger aged people are a big audience for adventure films, thus opening the variety of people who can go see the film to be larger. Whether the film contains strong language, the 12 cert is allowed to show violence but it is not allowed to dwell on the graphical nature of it (For example, the scenes when the helicopter crashes and when he escapes the island. These scenes are used to create spectacle but also create verisimilitude too) as the children under the age of 12 might not see it as a serious matter of seriously injured but they may see it as fun, but a passive audience would thrive on the realism of what happened, but due to a passive audience who are older, they understand it is a film so it isn't real while younger kids may see it differently. For example in the scene where Chuck cuts himself and a muffled swear word is heard. The older audience would be able to relate to this, but it is quite enough for the younger audience not to be influenced by it. Also, depending on the manor of a strong word was used it may be passed as suitable, but the film has no unreasonable amounts of swearing.
ASA
The ASA-Advertising Standards Authority manage the advertising codes in the UK. CAP -the committees of advertising practice write and maintain the advertising codes. According to the CAP rules of compliance, rule 1.1 says marketing communications should be legal, decent, honest and truthful. The film poster for Castaway follows these rules because no harmful material or untruthful content is listed. All that's denoted on the poster is a main image of the actor Tom Hanks (who played Chuck.) As well as the credits for the people who were involved with the film, The films name and also a caption line 'At the edge of the world, his journey begins'. Therefore the poster adheres to the ASA and can be seen by the mass audience is towns and cities. This would be beneficial to 20th Century Fox as the more people that see, the more profit potential there is.

LO3, Task 4: Advertising and distribiution
Hello, and today I am going to talking about the distribution and technological convergence and the way how films are distributed across the globe.
Distribution is about the way the product has been advertised and how it has been promoted to the public, it can be distributed in different ways using old (TV) and new media (streaming online)
Advertising
In regards to advertising examples TV adverts, online posters, billboards and bus stop posters also are ways of advertising. You will see an advert everyone you look, especially in big cities they will be on every corner you look at, buses, bus stops and bill boards etc. These are all methods of how my film was advertised. The reason for this is due to 20th Century Fox wanting to reach a mass audience through multiple advertising methods in order to make a larger profit. The stars of the film were also used as a way to advertise the film. Academy award winner Tom Hanks, is the main protagonist of the film, therefore he is an advert in himself due to his reputation, but also featured in magazine articles and TV interviews to promote the film.
Distribution
There is a lot of distribution between online and in hard copy, while online the companies like 20th Century Fox will pay heavily trafficked websites to advertise their film on there. With the film being made in 2000 the internet is not like what it is now, although the film was still advertised by a trailer on TV and a theatrical advert which would be played before films.
The world is open to many different ways that you can watch films. Castaway came out on DVD on the 12th June 2001 and it was available to buy. It was released in cinemas in 2000 across the globe. In current times there are plenty of ways of watching the film. You are able to watch the film via streaming it online on websites such as 'Putlocker', this website provides illegal access to a huge range of films, but there is also legal ways of streaming the film such as Netflix, which in America Cast Away is available to watch. The DVD is still available to buy, also it has been brought out on Blu-Ray as when blu-ray came out it was highly popular and everyone was buying it, this would be seen as a way of making more money off the film. The film was also available to watch via Sky Movies too due to 20th Century Fox and their ability to use horizontal integration to further promote their products. Streaming illegally is free and is good for families that don't have a high disposable income, while the DVD or Blu Ray would be purchased by the the high earning families who have a high disposable income, they could also afford merchandise from the film and also go to the cinema to see the film.
The budget of Castaway was $90 million and box office figures show that it made $233 million just from cinema sales. Therefore the multiple ways and distribution channels that 20th Century Fox used to distribute and advertise Castaway was successful.

LO2, Task 3: Audience
Hello I'm Josh and today I'm going to be talking about the different sections such as Age, gender,
Cast Away is rated a 12 certificate as it contains Strong language, and violence/self-harm. Also designating an audience to the film, you would see the audience to be young adults upwards, ages 21+, also with the film being an adventure, action genre, people who like to travel or adventure outside may find this film be more appealing.
Gender
The gender ratio for the film Cast Away is almost even but due to the adventuring and action I have given it a 60:40 rate towards men, as the main character is a male and stereotypically males are into action and survival stories.
To back up the gender ratio, different scenes in the film help split up the gender. Scenes such as the one where Chuck is trying to make a fire and he impales his hand, this would stereotypically be aimed for men as people think men would be more involved and interacted with violence.
Also in the film there would be scenes where the female gender would be more intrigued, as in one scene we see Chuck return back to the USA and he drives up to his wife's' house, and the environment around helps create a romantic theme which would appeal to women, a dark rainy night and Chuck and his wife, both meet outside and hug each other, the typical lines to create a romantic, sad scene "I love you" are shared between the pair.
Another scene which appeal more to the males watching the film would be Chuck trying to escape off the island, it makes the audience feel tense and gives a rush of excitement, as they don't know if he will survive the ocean, and he is putting all his effort in to escape and survive, survival would be aimed for the male gender as stereotypically they are seen as the stronger gender and that they could bring themselves to a state of being able to get back. Determination and courage are to key emotions in this scene but these still effect both genders.
The main character within the film is a strong male, which is made out to be a hero of his own story, and he is an ideal self to what men want to be, he looks strong and independent, the males would see him has a model that they would like to follow.
Age - Ideal self, metaphorically
The film is not always full of action and excitement so younger audiences may easily get bored of it, while the older audiences (20+) may find it more intriguing, the different scenes are all needed and each mean something else but the younger ages may not see that, they may just see it as a boring scene and they may not see the deeper meaning of it.
The ages of 20+ kind of mix in with the concept of the film metaphorically, as Chuck has to survive on a stranded island, but a young adult at that age could have just finished university, so they could see the situation as how are they now going to move on from uni and survive out in the working world and bring in money. Although it is no where near the same type of survival as Chuck is in a dangerous situation which could take his life.
With the film having scenes to make the audience feel sympathetic and also gives you mixed emotions whether it be happy or sad, the scene where the pair meet after the years Chuck spent on the island is a scene which is meant to make you happy for character but also depending on your state to make you cry as well, but the younger audience will not see it the same way as the older audience would see it as the it is more likely that an adult has been through the same thing unlike a young teen/child.
Lifestyle and spending power
The National Readership Survey is a joint venture company in the UK between the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising (IPA), the Newspaper Publishers Association (NPA) and the Periodical Publishers Association (PPA). It provides audience research for print advertising trading in the UK.
The lifestyle categories I have given for my movie would be the affluent achievers and the thriving greys, this is because these people are higher classes who earn a more considerable amount of money, also they have a larger disposable income. Also I would say that they would have either not had children or they have had them and they have grown up and are now in university or they own their own property as the parents would then have a larger disposable income as they don't need to fend for their children anymore.
Thriving greys may relate to the film Castaway as it is about an exotic, desolate island people with a high disposable income are able to visit islands such as these which are actually holiday destinations. They are more open to visit these kinds of locations than others who still have kids to look after thus meaning they have a less disposable income. Thriving greys also are deemed to have worked quite high up in the ranks at the placement where they were working, thus giving them more money, also they would be around the age of retirement so they also have more time as well as the money to spend on going on holiday and traveling.
The groups I would put my audience into would be ABC1 as they would all have enough money to do the extra things such as going to the cinema to see the film, buy any merchandise and buy the film on disc after they have paid off all their bills. Also these people can afford to go on holiday abroad, the AB people would be able to go on holiday to exotic islands like the island that they filmed Cast Away on in Fiji.

Voice Recorder Task
3 things I found easy
1) Working out how to use the recorder.
2) Playing it back.
3) Seeing how long the recording went on for.
3 things I found difficult
1) Working out which hole to put the headphone jack into.
2) Starting the recording
3)
I have learnt that there are 2 ports for 3.5mm jacks, one for the external mic and one for the headphones, I now know which one is for which.
I shall record my script on Wednesday as I need it for Fridays lesson.
